Yesterday our preference for bull hunting was rewarded as the declines only extended to the 17460 reversal point. The consolidation that unfolded thereafter encourages us to consider 17860 or even 17960 as a bullish, with the bearish marker pulled up to 17650.

Certainly the US Fed will raise interest rates, but the debate is how much. We feel that the Fed will raise it by 75 basis points even if there is a slight possibility that the increase could reach 100 basis points. If the Fed raises the rate by 75 basis points, we do not expect a significant negative impact on the Indian market. In fact, after every 75 basis point rate hike (as seen in June and July 2022), the Indian market has gone up. We expect a similar pattern to play out this time as well. At most, the US Fed’s rate hike may only impact Indian market sentiment for one day and not beyond.

Given that global markets are focused on Fedspeak on the 21st, major breakouts from current levels are unlikely for 2 days. A big correction after the Fed’s decision is only possible if the rate hike is 100 bps. The Indian market continues to show resilience despite global challenges. Major indexes like Nifty Bank, Autos, FMCG and Cement are at record highs, with only Nifty IT trailing the benchmarks. The real winners in this volatile market are the investors who stayed invested without a lot of trades. This strategy could be continued in the short term. There is emerging value in IT for long-term investors.
